Two Atlanta teenagers have been arrested in Gwinnett County in connection with the overdose death of a 16-year-old girl.

The Gwinnett County Police Department arrested Dino Runar Bonasera, 17, on charges of murder, aggravated manslaughter causing death by fentanyl overdose, sale of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and use of a means of communication during the commission of a crime involving controlled substances.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old minor was also arrested and will be charged as an adult. She faces charges of murder, aggravated manslaughter causing death by fentanyl overdose, sale of a controlled substance and use of a communications facility in the commission of a felony involving controlled substances.

The GCPD said in a statement that the enactment of Austin’s law in April 2024 led to seven people being charged with aggravated manslaughter. The law aims to hold accountable those suspected of involvement in drug-related deaths. Austin law provides for a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The agency has seen a 30 percent decrease in fatal overdoses this year, according to the release.

The GCPD reminded the public that anyone seeking medical help in good faith for someone experiencing a drug overdose will not be arrested, charged, or prosecuted for drug offenses that arise solely from the request for help .
