March trial proceeds in Grand Island shooting case

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – A Grand Island man is scheduled to go to trial in March on felony weapons and assault charges in connection with an August shooting near a Grand Island high school.

Gerber Perez Vasquez, 41, is charged with use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, unlawful discharge of a firearm from or near a vehicle and first-degree assault.

Court records show he pleaded not guilty to the charges. A judge ordered Perez Vasquez’s trial to begin March 3, 2025. Two more preliminary hearings are scheduled before then.

Police arrested Perez Vasquez on Aug. 26 after the shooting victim reported the incident. Authorities said the victim, Jose Argueta-Hernandez, got into an argument with Perez Vasquez at a home in the 2300 block of North Kruse Avenue, near Grand Island High School.

During the altercation, Perez Vasquez allegedly hit Argueta-Hernández with a pistol. The gun then went off and Argueta-Hernández was injured in the shoulder. The victim was treated and released from CHI Health St. Francis.

Argueta-Hernandez was cited for misdemeanor third-degree assault by mutual consent.

If convicted, Perez Vasquez faces up to 50 years in prison. He is free on $9,000 cash bail.
