Iroquois County State’s Attorney Says Officer ‘Justified’ Shooting Suspect During Standoff | News

SHELDON — An investigation by Illinois State Police and the Iroquois County State’s Attorney concluded that a deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect in an alleged kidnapping was “justified”.

Andrew Roselius, 37, Ashkum, was shot and killed by an Iroquois County deputy on September 1, 2024 after shooting at a Newton County, Indiana deputy during a confrontation with law enforcement, a said Iroquois County State’s Attorney James Devine’s office.

Roselius was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cpl. Brandon Schreiber died from his injuries at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana 10 days later.

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police, Newton County Sheriff’s Department and the Kentland, Indiana Police Department responded to a suspected kidnapping in progress on September 1 .

The vehicle of Roselius, a suspect in the case, was found in rural Iroquois County. Roselius refused to stop for law enforcement and drove to Newton County, Indiana. He then returned to Iroquois County and struck another vehicle in Sheldon.

Once stopped, the Roselius vehicle was surrounded by law enforcement. He was allegedly armed and suicidal, the state’s attorney’s office wrote.

“A confrontation occurred between law enforcement and Mr. Roselius while he was seated in his vehicle,” officials said. “After law enforcement repeatedly asked Mr. Roselius to show his hands and exit his vehicle, Mr. Roselius pulled out a revolver and fired one shot which struck a County Deputy. Newton in Indiana to the head, leaving him seriously injured.”

An Iroquois County deputy returned fire and struck Roselius in the head.

The Illinois State Police Area 5 Investigation Team then conducted an investigation into the shooting.

“After a thorough review of testimony, body camera footage, cruiser camera footage, ballistic testing, Illinois State Crime Lab analysis, and autopsy findings, the office of the Iroquois County State’s Attorney has received all relevant information related to the investigation,” the State’s Attorney’s Office said. wrote. “Iroquois County State’s Attorney Jim Devine has concluded that the death of Andrew Roselius by law enforcement on September 1, 2024, was justified.”

The State Attorney’s Office will take no further action in this matter.
