New mural near Rocky Statue to feature real-life heroes – NBC10 Philadelphia

Do you know someone who embodies the story of “Rocky”? Someone who was an underdog but persevered despite the odds?

Well, the Philadelphia Visitor Center, in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, wants to select four people to be featured in a new mural next to the rock statue near the steps of the art museum.

It’s all part of a one-of-a-kind mural series showcasing the “Real Life Rockys” of the City of Brotherly Love.

Community members are invited to submit nominations through the Philadelphia Visitor Center website. Applications are open until Friday October 25.

Applicants will be evaluated based on five criteria:

  • Courage and determination: Demonstrate resilience to overcome challenges.
  • Heart and Compassion: Demonstrate empathy and support to other members of the community.
  • Community Connection: Be actively engaged in their neighborhood or city.
  • Philadelphia Pride: Reflecting the tenacity and pride of Philadelphia.
  • Inspiring story: Have a compelling story that inspires others.

“Rocky is a hero to so many and the film’s message of overcoming all odds to become a champion has inspired a national and international pilgrimage to this iconic site. The Real Life Rockys program is an opportunity to shine a light on the unsung heroes who make Philadelphia a better place,” said Kathryn Ott Lovell, president and CEO of Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation. “Whether your real Rocky is a local leader, a dedicated volunteer, or someone who faced adversity with grace, we want to hear their stories!” »

Jane Golden, Executive Director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, added: “Mural Arts is thrilled to partner with the Philadelphia Visitor Center to celebrate our city’s resilience through the ‘Real Life Rockys’ project, which honors Philadelphians of all the days that defied the odds, just like Rocky. By showcasing these stories alongside one of our most iconic landmarks, we not only celebrate our city’s indomitable spirit, but we also inspire visitors from around the world to connect with these powerful tales of perseverance.

Ash Ryan, a street artist and muralist from Philadelphia, will be the lead artist on the project.

The mural will be unveiled on Wednesday December 1. 4, during RockyFest, a week-long celebration of the iconic “Rocky” film franchise.

The calendar of events begins with the second annual “Rocky Day” on Tuesday, December 3, and continues. with special events until Sunday, December 8.
