ANC Tshwane caucus leader Eugene Modise has been elected unopposed as the new deputy mayor of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.

Modise was nominated by his party at a council meeting today and faced no challenger.

This follows the newly formed coalition between the ANC, EFF, ActionSA and smaller parties.

Modise, who is also the MMC for finance, takes up the position following the resignation of Dr Nasiphi Moya from ActionSA. Moya was previously elected mayor following the ouster of DA mayor Cilliers Brink.

Council President Mncedi Ndzwana noted that with only one candidate nominated, there was no need for a secret ballot. “Honourable Councilors, clause 5 of Schedule 3 of the Municipal Structures Act (117 of 1998) states that where there is only one candidate nominated, I must declare that candidate elected. I now declare, in relation to this section, Eugene Modise as the new Deputy Mayor of the Tshwane Metropolitan City.

“No fear or intimidation”

In his acceptance speech, Modise said he understood the responsibilities of the role and would not allow fear or intimidation to hinder his duties.

“I will not let fear or intimidation prevent me from carrying out my duties and responsibilities,” he said.

Modise also emphasized its commitment to providing services without prejudice. “I refuse to carry the prism of racism when serving the people of Tshwane or to carry a pinch of negativity in carrying out the mandate entrusted to me. »

He called on all council members, regardless of political affiliation, to work together for the benefit of residents. “Tshwane prides itself on its education and our conduct must reflect this reality. I call on all councilors to love one another so that we can serve our citizens with love.

Modise is committed to improving the working conditions of municipal employees and ensuring that investment projects are supported and monitored. “We must provide essential services to residents, ensure access to health care and turn white elephant projects into beneficial ones. »

He also highlighted the need for better management of Tshwane’s landfills. “We cannot be a capital that does not manage waste and its own landfills,” Modise concluded.
