Paranormal activity took the world by storm in 2007. On the surface, it’s a very simple found footage film, featuring unknown actors in a single location, but these are the makings of a truly cinematic experience terrifying. It was made on a low budget of $215,000 and grossed $194 million at the box office, making it one of the most successful horror films of all time. It holds up even 17 years after its release, and it’s a must-see for those in need of a good scare.

The realism is of course what makes this film as terrifying as it is. The actors mostly improvised, and we spend most of the film watching footage in the middle of the night, just waiting for something to happen. It’s still as awesome as the first time I saw it.

As the best entry in Edgar Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy” (I said what I said), this romantic comedy is perfect for any Halloween movie night. It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s deeply sad in places, it’s everything you could want from a zombie movie. Like much of Wright’s work, it’s quotable, perfectly filmed, and manages to balance that classic British humor with the impending doom of the apocalypse. Warm Fuzz And The end of the world both worth your time, of course, Shaun of the Dead will always reign supreme over me.

Placing a very mediocre man in the middle of a zombie outbreak where he has to deal with his crumbling relationships while keeping everyone alive is hugely entertaining, especially when the bulk of his plan boils down to having a pint and drinking. ‘to wait for. I mean, what else do you do?

The Babook is a truly impressive debut film. There’s a lot of pressure on a filmmaker when it comes to introducing their first work to the world, and Jennifer Kent stunned audiences with her portrayal of parenthood, heartbreak, and madness. Using beautiful (and frightening) stop-motion animation and practical effects, this film is as haunting as it is poignant. Seeing disturbing scenes depicted in a children’s pop-up book will definitely stick with you for a while.

Essie Davis is terrific as a struggling mother, trying to come to terms with the loss of her husband while struggling to connect with her young son, who shows signs of neurodivergence. It’s a deeply touching horror and it’s truly something special.

I love a good slasher comedy. Shout is one of my favorite horrors of all time given its self-awareness and willingness to poke fun at, let’s be honest, a sometimes silly genre. Totally killer takes a similar approach, with the brilliant Kiernan Shipka, best known for her starring role in the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The horror genre loves to use numbers (you know, 666, 13, etc.), but here it’s 16. The antagonist of Totally killer is nicknamed the “Sweet 16 Killer” where they stab their victims 16 times on the nights of their 16th birthday. Is this a bit silly? Yes. Is it also extremely entertaining? Yes too!
