An artistic roller skater from Simile, Given Chiloane (20), is looking to become one of the best skaters to represent Mpumalanga.

One achievement Chiloane deserves to be recognized for is being part of the Roller Sport South Africa senior figure skating team that competed at the World Skate Games Italia 2024 in Rimini, Italy. This team performed on September 21 and did their best to represent their country in such a prestigious championship, even though they came last.

Chiloane was the only Mpumalangan in the team and said the recognition was a great experience. “I love skating and I love the opportunities it has exposed me to. I competed in the national championships and was chosen to compete in the world games and be part of the quartet. It was amazing to be in Italy for almost two weeks. The people, the scenes and the air were simply refreshing. On top of that, the competition was close and there were a lot of great skaters that we were able to compete against and learn from,” he said.

Chiloane said he started skating in 2018 when he joined the Sabie Roller Skating Club. “I was exposed to football as an extracurricular activity. When I saw people skating in the community, I immediately fell in love with it. I asked my mother if I could sign up, but she couldn’t afford the fees and materials. My grandmother gave me the R30 I needed to join the club and see where it would take me. I started as a speed skater and then ventured into figure skating to get that experience.
