Crackdown on stubble burning in Punjab: progress in pollution control

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has announced a significant decrease in cases of stubble burning in September and October, reflecting improved efforts to combat pollution. A total of 1,254 FIRs were filed and fines amounting to Rs 13.25 lakh were imposed by the authorities.

The PPCB’s proactive approach is in response to the National Green Tribunal’s request to receive regular updates on stubble burning incidents impacting air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR). The measures include compliance with the guidelines of the Supreme Court and the Air Quality Management Commission.

This year, the number of incidents fell sharply, to 1,638, compared to previous years. The Punjab government’s persistent efforts from September 15 to October 23 demonstrate its continued commitment to reducing environmental pollution.
