Game Freak Confirms Massive Pokémon Hack and Tons of Information Leaked

A massive amount of PokemonInformation relating to the series was released online in a hack targeting the series’ developer, Game Freak, and said studio has now confirmed the hack and its cause.

In a statement released yesterday by Game Freak, the developer said (according to a translation by ResetEra user Axe) that the hack was due to “unauthorized access to our server by a third party in August 2024.”

The leak, called “Teraleak” online, contains images and information relating to the development of several Pokemon games, including what appear to be beta development sprites, work-in-progress screenshots, and much more.

A huge amount of Pokemon-related information was leaked in a targeted attack against developer Game Freak.

Info on upcoming events Pokemon games, including the fact (perhaps completely unsurprisingly) that the next Pokemon The game is in development for the next Switch successor, has also been leaked.

However, it’s not all fun news and gaming information. Game Freak confirmed that the personal information of more than 2,600 employees, including company names and email addresses, was also included in the leak.

The studio says it has “already rebuilt and inspected the server” to prevent a similar hack from happening again, and that it plans to further strengthen its security measures to “prevent this from happening again.”

Of course, the developer remains suspicious about the exact cause of the unauthorized access to its server. Game Freak has also not technically confirmed any of the Pokemon-related information contained in the leak, but it is unlikely that any official confirmation on this will be available.

Leakage accounts and Pokemon news sources are still sifting through what will likely turn out to be an ungodly amount of data, so it’s likely that more will be uncovered as well in the coming days. One thing is certain though: Nintendo is not going to be happy about this.
