More than 300 people killed in northern Gaza last week during Israeli offensive: local authorities

GAZA CITY, Palestine

More than 300 people have been killed in the ongoing Israeli offensive in the northern Gaza Strip since last week, local authorities announced on Sunday.

“We have documented 300 deaths in nine consecutive days of genocide amid systematic massacres and a complete siege against civilians,” Ismail al-Thawabteh, who heads the Gaza government’s media office, said during a press conference.

He condemned the Israeli military’s efforts to destroy Gaza’s health system and transform northern Gaza into a habitable area.

“This is being done deliberately and intentionally under the full cover of the US administration, which supports and works to organize a genocide and to fully cover up the massacres of the occupation,” he added.

The Israeli army launched a military operation in northern Gaza on October 6 amid a strict siege of the area, saying the offensive was aimed at preventing Hamas from regaining strength in the region.

Israel continued its brutal offensive on Gaza following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Since then, more than 42,200 people have been killed, mostly women and children, and more than 98,400 have been injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israeli attack has displaced almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip, amid a continuing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, drinking water and medicine.

Israel faces a genocide case before the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
