NDLEA removes husband approval rule for visa

NDLEA removes husband approval rule for visa

There were no corresponding requirements for men, which sparked an online conversation about equal rights between women and men.

This requirement is part of a global effort to reduce the incidence of drug trafficking.

It is the “source countries”, not the NDLEA or Nigeria, that are driving policy and requesting this document.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has released a list of eight countries to which it must provide mandatory visa clearance in 2021.

Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Pakistan, Philippines and Russia are some of these countries.

Many people online have expressed their displeasure over this. Here are some tweets:

The official NDLEA account removed this requirement, stating on social media that:

“The entire procedure for obtaining a visa issued by the NDLEA, as required by some countries, is currently under review, and the requirements for a married woman to present a letter of authorization from her husband to travel are one of the items that the agency has since dropped as mandatory items on the list.

The inclusion of this abinitio point came about following disastrous developments in some countries of origin.

Members of the public are assured that the items have been removed from the list of requirements.

This issue also speaks to the huge gender disparity that exists in many Nigerian laws, particularly on matters of travel and immigration.

One of these issues is that a Nigerian woman cannot confer Nigerian citizenship on her foreign husband, but a Nigerian can confer citizenship on his foreign wife.

It should not be equality because the law is a fundamental human right. What is good for the goose should be good for the eyes.
