TikTok Removes Over 2.1 Million Infringing Videos in Nigeria – Report

Social media app TikTok removed over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria in the second quarter of 2024 due to violations of its community standards.

In its Community Guidelines Enforcement report released Tuesday, TikTok said the development was part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve content moderation and make the platform safer for users.

The report highlights TikTok’s significant actions to moderate content in Nigeria, showing that these videos were removed for violating its community guidelines.

“Key findings show that 99.1% of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, and 90.7% of them were removed within 24 hours. These figures underline TikTok’s commitment to staying ahead of harmful content, ensuring a safer platform for Nigerian users,” the report noted.

He added that removed videos accounted for less than 1 percent of total uploads in Nigeria during the reporting period.

The social media company reported that as of June 2024, it had removed more than 178 million videos worldwide, with automated technologies enabling 144 million removals.

“With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2% globally, TikTok is more effective than ever at tackling harmful content before users encounter it,” it says.

It therefore assured that it would continue to invest in technologies aimed at improving content moderation and understanding potential risks.
