Man shot at Las Vegas casino pleads guilty to stabbing two hotel workers

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man who stabbed two Las Vegas resort employees before a security guard shot him in the middle of the casino pleaded guilty Tuesday and will be sentenced in November, records show.

Shayne Sussman, 25, pleaded guilty through Alford to three counts of attempted murder. An Alford plea means he did not admit guilt, but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convince a jury to convict him, records show.

The stabbing and then shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on Aug. 3 inside the Red Rock Resort. 8 News Now investigators first identified Sussman shortly after his arrest.

Videos obtained by 8 News Now investigators show a man identified by prosecutors as Sussman walking in the resort’s hotel lobby before the stabbing. The video shows Sussman stumbling and waiting to see an open door to an employee area.

According to court transcripts, Sussman ran toward the employee “out of nowhere,” the employee told a Clark County grand jury. “He growled like an animal. Like he’s a bear or something,” the employee said.

At 1:01 a.m., less than two minutes after the stabbing, hotel security made contact with Sussman who was sitting near a casino restaurant. Sussman allegedly told the officer, “Sweetheart. My heart is racing! » while holding a bloody knife. Staff described Sussman as “extremely under the influence.” A security guard then spotted a knife in Sussman’s hand.

Officers then pursued Sussman through the casino. At one point, the video shows Sussman turning around with his knife in his hand in an attempt to strike an officer. The officer testified before the grand jury that he believed Sussman narrowly missed. Another security guard then shot Sussman once while he was running away from other security personnel.

Sussman faces several years in prison, documents show. Prosecutors will ask a judge to sentence him to 20 years in prison, although his parole eligibility could begin much earlier than that.

“The guilty plea agreement was reached through the court’s settlement conference program,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Dickerson. “This involved having a judge oversee the negotiation process and having all three victims of these crimes present and involved every step of the way. Shayne Sussman’s guilty plea is a step in the right direction toward the healing these victims need. We will continue to demand justice for the victims and the community at the sentencing hearing scheduled for next month.

Sentencing was scheduled for November 26.
