Alleged scam returns to New York state; “Don’t come any closer”

Alleged scam returns to New York state; “Don’t come any closer”

Authorities suggest staying away from a man asking for money in Hudson Valley parking lots.

You may remember us telling you a few years ago about a person who appeared to be playing the violin in front of supermarkets and shopping centers while soliciting money. Experts said at the time that the practice was associated with a network of scammers who were up to no good.

Today, the fiddlers are back and people are handing over their hard-earned money again, unaware of the alleged scam that is taking place.

This time, one of the “violinists” enlists the help of a young child and a woman. The same player was spotted outside the Shop Rite supermarkets on Route 9 in Fishkill and at the Shoppes at South Hills in Poughkeepsie.

A sign posted by the lawyer is almost word for word the same one used last time when we warned you about a potential scam. They both start with the phrase “Please, I need help” and then explain how they and their children need money to pay their bills. The speaker used by the “fiddler” in 2021 is also the exact same model currently used by the lawyer spotted in Dutchess County.

After observing the supposed violinist for a few moments, we noticed that he didn’t actually appear to be playing the instrument. The movements were not consistent with the music coming out of the speaker, suggesting that he was simply miming the movements to a pre-recorded track.

The scam has been going on for years across the country. There are reports in almost every state of the exact same scam.

Authorities warn that these suspected fraudsters should be avoided. Safety experts don’t suggest attempting to confront them or question their musical abilities.

It is important to remember that there are services available for people who need help paying their bills. If you’re serious about helping people in need, experts suggest donating to a trusted charity or nonprofit. This way, you can rest assured that your money will be put to good use for the people who need it.
