Is this the most dangerous junction in Britain? Drivers denounce misleading road signs behind 13 accidents in just six weeks

Shocking CCTV footage has been released showing a series of car crashes at “Britain’s most dangerous junction”, which has seen thirteen accidents in just six weeks.

The junction along the A521 in Cheadle has seen cars flip into the air, collide with lorries and cause almost £200,000 of damage over the past two months and furious motorists are demanding something change .

Misleading crossing signs and faded road markings are believed to be behind the staggering number of accidents as cars regularly fail to slow down in time.

Doorbell footage from councilor Gary Bentley’s house next door captured the dramatic scenes and he believes there have been around 13 accidents since August alone.

A video shows a car failing to spot crossing markings and speeding past the lines before being hit by a truck.

Another clip shows an SUV being crushed by a VW Golf before being sent across the road onto the pavement.

The most recent accident occurred on Thursday (17/10) when a car and a van collided at the junction between Draycott Cross Road.

Homeowners now fear someone could be killed in the crash and are urging the council to take action.

Nearby, the owner of The Huntsman pub, Conor Bernard Devine, keeps track of the number of days between each smash, which currently stands at four.

Conor, 55, said: “You hear a big bang, you run out and there’s a car on its roof again.

“It’s a matter of time before someone is killed there.”

“We are currently on a four-day streak. We’ve been here 15 years, it’s always been bad for accidents.

“For some reason things are getting worse. I don’t know if it’s the road markings or not.

“Three were very serious, then there were a few small skirmishes.

“There is also an Aldi supermarket under construction which will increase traffic in the town.”

Independent councilor Gary Bentley, of High Peak Borough Council, owns a house overlooking the junction and has called for traffic lights to be installed.

Gary, whose father also lives a short walk away, said: “It’s a busy intersection. We think this could be the most dangerous in Britain – it has been in recent weeks.

“To add insult to injury, on the other side of the pub we have just passed an Aldi supermarket.

“We were all concerned about the highway issues and people from out of town coming down. Most accidents come from people outside the area.”

“A few weeks ago a car came and didn’t know it had to stop. There were two. One was hit by a car and the other by a truck. We attribute it to the faint lines.

“The council has drawn a line. But last week’s accident happened on the other side, where they didn’t paint. They only painted one side of the road. Who does this?

“One side is beautifully painted, the other side is invisible. I wanted the signs to change from yield to stop, that’s the minimum I want.

“Ideally, we want a set of traffic lights. We had another intersection that caused a death, but 18 months ago they had traffic lights. This is what I advocate.

“It happens all the time. We don’t just have these big accidents, we also have small accidents.

“We estimate we’ve had about 13 accidents since August.” My father is 84 years old and he wanders this road all day. That’s what concerns me.

“This has been going on for years, but it seems to have gotten worse this year. I can only attribute it to road maintenance, potholes too.

“There were no white lines at the end. There is a crossing sign at the top.

“It’s my corner, I love my corner. We all get along, we all help each other. The only thing that disappoints us is the intersection.

His father, Alan Bentley, who has lived in the area for 60 years, added: “It’s not safe. I would like a big roundabout, a huge roundabout to slow them down, or traffic lights.

Mark Deaville, cabinet member for strategic highways at Staffordshire County Council, said the accidents were being investigated.

He said: “Once we have all the information we will see if any action is needed on site.

“Keeping our roads safe remains our priority and we listen to residents and work with local communities if they have any concerns about road safety in their area.”
