Cowboy Bebop Director’s Upcoming Anime Gets New Trailer and Fans Are Worried

The new sci-fi anime from Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe just got another trailer, and while the visuals are good, viewers are keeping their expectations low.

Lazarus is the upcoming anime directed by Shinichirō and animated by MAPPA, an original TV show set in a dystopian future. Featuring action sequences overseen by Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the John Wick films, it’s an animated series with a huge pedigree.

New York Comic-Con 2024 brought a new clip, focused on a single scene. In it, we see a man being stalked in a subway station by a number of drones, giving us a glimpse of the fluid animation and police technology of the universe.

It’s a solid clip, even if we’re not privy to the finer details of the plot – so far we just know that it’s about a task force tracking down an escaped scientist after creating a drug that kills users after a set period of time.

Still, people enjoy the tease, even if they are wary because of Adult Swim’s involvement. “After Ninja Kamui’s presentation, I’m going to keep my excitement about it for a while,” said one user on X/Twitter.

“Please don’t be like Ninja Kamui,” adds another. “So, are you also pulling a bait and switch here like you did with Uzumaki?” said a third.

Both of these series experienced pretty significant drops after making an impression with their premieres, but for different reasons. Ninja Kamui started strong but lost momentum as the season progressed, while Uzumaki, a miniseries, seemed to deteriorate in real time between episodes 1 and 2, with the second being of much lower quality.

Adult Swim hosted both, and they somewhat tarnished the network’s reputation. Given the people involved, Lazarus may present himself with more confidence, but we can only wait and see. The event revealed that all 13 episodes are now complete.

It’s coming sometime in 2025. Check out our guides to Solo Leveling Season 2 and My Hero Academia Season 8 for more releases coming next year.
