Gwynedd crash: Concerns over new drivers carrying passengers after teenagers die | UK News

A coroner has raised concerns about newly qualified drivers carrying passengers after four teenagers died in a crash in north Wales.

Hugo Morris, 18, lost control of his silver Ford Fiesta on the A4085 in the village of Garreg, Gwynedd, on November 19 last year, before the vehicle rolled into a ditch.

He was camping in Snowdonia with Jevon Hirst, 16, Harvey Owen, 17, and Wilf Fitchett, 17, all from the Shropshire area.

An inquest into their deaths took place in Caernarfon on Wednesday.

Mr Morris, who had passed his driving test just over six months previously, was described by his family as having “a lust for life”.

Crystal Owen, Harvey’s mother, has since campaigns for the introduction of progressive driving licensing for new drivers.

Dr Anton van Dellen, representing Mr Owen’s family, said the coroner should consider writing a report to prevent future deaths.

Kate Robertson, North West Senior Coroner Walessaid it would write to the Department for Transport and the DVLA to raise its concerns.

She feared deaths would continue to occur where “young, newly qualified drivers are allowed to carry passengers”.

Speaking outside court, Ms Owen said she was “very pleased” with the outcome of the investigation.

But she said the government still needed to act and her son was “disappointed by an outdated driving license system”.

The Department for Transportation has previously said there are “no plans to introduce tougher restrictions for new drivers”, but it is keeping licensing requirements “under review”.

The coroner concluded it was a road collision and said “the four young men would have died very shortly after the collision”.

The autopsy revealed that they died of drowning.
