Prime Minister Modi’s ‘crown’ donated to Kali temple in Bangladesh stolen; India expresses concern | News from India

NEW DELHI: India has urged Bangladesh to investigate the reported theft of a religious item gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple during his visit to that country in 2021. In an article on ‘X,’ The Indian High Commission in Dhaka expressed deep concern over the theft and called on authorities to recover the item and take action against the perpetrators of the crime.

“We have seen reports of theft of the crown gifted by Prime Minister Modi at the Jeshoreshwari Kali (Satkhira) temple in 2021 during his visit to Bangladesh,” he said. “We express our deep concern and urge the government of Bangladesh to investigate the theft, recover the crown and take action against the perpetrators,” the statement added.

Separately, Indian government sources said New Delhi was deeply troubled by the reported theft incident. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka is in touch with Bangladesh authorities over the matter, they said.

Bangladeshi law enforcement authorities have been asked to investigate the incident, recover the stolen item and bring the culprits to justice, the sources said.
