Traffic police launch operation targeting fake diplomatic number plates

Jakarta. Jakarta Traffic Police launched a two-week operation in Greater Jakarta on Monday, focusing on common traffic violations, including the growing problem of motorists using fake diplomatic license plates to avoid police checks.

There have been numerous cases of car owners illegally using counterfeit VIP number plates, intended for high-ranking officials or security officers, to obtain special privileges.

The use of fake diplomatic plates – marked with the letters “CD” (diplomatic corps) or “CC” (consular corps) – has also seen a sharp increase recently, according to Chief Commissioner Latif Usman, director of the Traffic Police from Jakarta.

“Many people are using fake diplomatic license plates. We have received complaints from several embassies regarding the illegal use of their plates by unauthorized persons, and we are taking this matter seriously,” Latif said.

The operation, dubbed Operation Zebra Jaya, will deploy 2,939 officers to Jakarta and its neighboring cities: Bekasi, Depok and Tangerang.

In addition to tackling fake diplomatic plates, Jakarta Police have identified 13 other key traffic offenses to target during the operation, including:

1. Unauthorized use of rotating lights and sirens,
2. Unauthorized use of government license plates,
3. Driving or driving by minors,
4. Driving against the flow,
5. Driving under the influence,
6. Distracted driving due to cell phone use,
7. Failure to wear a seat belt,
8. Speeding,
9. Overloading of motorcycles,
10. Vehicles unfit for circulation,
11. Lack of safety equipment,
12. Lack of valid vehicle registration documents,
13. Violation of designated traffic lanes.
