Man pleads guilty to 2023 rape of woman on Upper West Side

Manhattan, New York — Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced that Jamel McIver, 31, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape for sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in his Upper West Side apartment building Side in March 2023. McIver pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court and is scheduled for sentencing on December 11, 2024.

The assault occurred on March 4, 2023, around 1:20 a.m., when McIver followed the victim, an unknown man, into his apartment building near West 64th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. He then threatened the woman, dragged her down a stairwell and raped her. McIver continued to threaten the victim throughout the assault, dragging her down several flights of stairs and eventually outside the building, where he made one final threat before releasing her. He fled after throwing away his jacket and sweatshirt.

District Attorney Bragg condemned the attack as a “horrific act of sexual violence” and reaffirmed his commitment to holding the perpetrators accountable to ensure the safety of all Manhattan residents.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Jonathan Carfagno and James Clarke, under the supervision of senior members of the Special Victims Division and the Office of Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence. The Office of Survivor Services, including Special Victim Advisor Nakeisha Vanterpool, is providing support to the victim.

Bronx, New York — Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at approximately 8:33 p.m., outside of 1471 Taylor Avenue. According to reports, three unidentified individuals approached the scene, brandished firearms and fired multiple shots before fleeing in a dark-colored SUV heading south on Taylor Avenue.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

The investigation continues and police are seeking any information that could help identify the suspects involved.

Bronx, New York — A 16-year-old boy, Kemari Sanders, died from injuries sustained in a shooting in August, and the case is currently being investigated as a homicide, New Town police said York. Sanders, who resided on East 172 Street in the Bronx, succumbed to his injuries on Friday, October 4, 2024.

The shooting occurred on August 23, 2024, around 12:40 a.m., near the corner of Bryant Avenue and Jennings Street. The victim was walking in the area when an unidentified suspect fired one shot, hitting Sanders in the neck. The shooter fled the scene heading north on Bryant Avenue.

Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the suspect in connection with the incident.
