‘Black Boy’ pleads guilty to murder of sugar cane harvester

Donald Grovesnor, 30, nicknamed ‘Black Boy’, accused of murdering a man, is now awaiting sentencing after admitting guilt to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

During his arraignment before Justice Navindra Singh of the Demerara High Court, he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Justice Navindra Singh

He admitted that in March 2019, in Demerara County, he unlawfully killed Suraj Jailall, 29, called “Neshal”, a cane harvester from Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

Judge Singh deferred sentencing until October 30, 2024 to hear probation and other social impact reports. Grovesnor remains in custody.

The case is being prosecuted by attorneys Muntaz Ali, Madana Rampersaud and Christopher Belfield.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the duo were drinking at a shop in their Sisters Village community on March 3, 2019, when an argument broke out between them.

Some time later, Grovesnor allegedly accosted Jailall, but then let him go and returned home. The man, however, returned with a cutlass and dealt Jailall the fatal blow before escaping.

Jailall died the following day at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH).
He was allegedly hit in the head.

Reports indicate the cut severed part of the victim’s ear. The incident reportedly occurred following an argument between the two individuals in February 2019.
