CHIMWENDO ELEVATES TWO NTCHEU CHEFS, HIGHLIGHTING THEIR ROLE IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has elevated traditional authorities Ganya and Champiti of Ntcheu district to high positions.

During the elevation ceremony, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, highlighted the vital role that traditional leaders play in the socio-economic development of the country.

He, however, warned against misuse of relief resources, urging leaders not to divert aid for personal favors.

“As I stand before you today, I implore our traditional leaders – the true custodians of culture and heritage – to prioritize the well-being of their communities.

“For Malawi to progress, we need leaders of integrity who stand up for the voiceless, the elderly and the orphans. It is discouraging to see some traditional leaders defying the laws by diverting food relief, agricultural inputs and land intended for the most deprived.

“I want to make it clear that President Chakwera will not tolerate any traditional ruler engaged in corruption or abuse of power,” said Chimwendo, who is also the general secretary of the ruling Malawi Congress Party.

He further urged the chiefs to act as watchdogs, ensuring that the development initiatives of the district councils effectively reach their communities.

In response, Inkosi Yamakosi V commended President Chakwera for his development initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, including climate-related programs and an increase in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to 200 million kwacha.

Importantly, on April 10, 2024, President Chakwera also elevated traditional authorities Njolomole, Masasa, Champiti and Ganya to high positions.
