Utrecht University turns off its lights on October 26 – News

In addition to turning off the lights at night, we are working on smarter lighting throughout the year. We only light where necessary, we choose LED lighting everywhere, adjust the lighting as efficiently as possible, use for example presence detection and daylight regulation. As the UU has many buildings, this is a process that takes several years. This year, it was the turn of the Buys Ballot Building and the Ruppert Building. For 2025, USP’s plans include the University Library and Olympos and, in the city center, Drift 23 and 25, Janskerkhof 2-3A and Kromme Nieuwegracht 80.

The result? Currently, we have achieved savings of approximately 931.00 kWh by adjusting the lighting in our buildings. This represents a CO2 reduction of around 500 tonnes, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 143 Dutch households. In this way we contribute to a healthier biorhythm of humans and animals, we can enjoy a beautiful starry sky and we contribute to energy savings.
