  • Black bear hunting season begins Monday in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey’s black bear hunting season opens Monday, October 14 with new regulations and safety measures in place. The hunt is divided into two segments, with Segment A taking place October 14-19 and Segment B scheduled for December 9-14. The first three days of Segment A are reserved for archery, while muzzle-loading weapons are permitted from October 17.

Under state rules, hunters are limited to one bear per segment and cannot take bears weighing less than 75 pounds live or 50 pounds dressed. The New Jersey Fish and Game Council recently updated the state’s black bear management policy, with the amendments officially adopted on October 2.

The 2024 season also includes a potential extension of Segment B if the harvest rate does not reach 20% by the end of the regular segment. If the season is extended, hunting will continue from December 18 to 21.

Hunters are reminded of restrictions, including a ban on bear hunting near baited areas and a requirement to check for bears harvested at designated stations across the state. The season could close early if the cumulative harvest reaches 30% of tagged bears.

For more information on regulations and permit details, hunters can visit the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website.
