Teenagers wanted for throwing rocks at cars, people on Detroit train tracks

DETROIT (FOX 2)Detroit police are looking for teenagers who throw rocks at passing cars from train tracks.

Two teenagers gained access to the train tracks near the downtown Amtrak station and began throwing rocks at people and cars below.

“This is not a game, this is not a joke,” said Cmdr. Matthew Fulgenzi.

This goes beyond children just being children. It started with a trespass for two teenagers, but it didn’t stop there. They started throwing stones.

A man passing by was shot in the face.

“He was taken to the hospital, received medical attention and some stitches,” Fulgenzi said.

Then, 12 minutes later, Detroit police said a woman’s windshield was hit by another barrage of rocks. She thought she had been shot.

“Just imagine driving and hitting your vehicle, we could have had a collision with another motorist on the roadway – she could have hit something else,” he said.

Or a killed event – and it’s already happened. In a 2017 case in Flint, five teenagers participated in throwing a 6-pound rock from an overpass on I-75. He struck the passenger of a pickup truck and the 32-year-old man was killed.

One of these teenagers was charged and convicted of second degree murder. He is serving up to 20 years in prison.

And that is the whole point of this affair.

“This is going to result in serious criminal charges,” Fulgenzi said.

After the second rock throwing — near Baltimore and Third streets — witnesses said the teens ran away, no one seeing them get into a car.

Everything happened around 1 p.m. Thursday and nothing has happened since.

“There is no pattern of this, our downtown is extremely safe,” the commander said.

Fulgenzi – asks the children to surrender and obviously never do it again.

“They don’t know what can happen with the trains up there, they could get hurt,” he said. “I remind parents to know where your children are, talk to them.”

It’s not much, but one of the suspects was wearing a bright green hoodie and the other was wearing a burgundy sweatshirt.

Detroit police are working to release the video to the public as soon as they can find it.

“It’s unacceptable and we’re going to get them,” Fulgenzi said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Third Precinct, (313) 596-5300, which is investigating.
