CCSD trustee files complaint alleging three board members violated open meeting laws

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford could possibly investigate CCSD board President Evenly Garcia-Morales, board attorney Nicole Malich and an unidentified administrator after having been accused of violating open assembly laws.

“It is contrary to the Nevada Revised Statute to discuss any item that may be placed on the agenda of a board of directors that will be the subject of any deliberation at a meeting behind closed doors,” said administrator Isaac Barrón, who filed the complaint.

Barrón said he filed a complaint nearly three weeks ago against the three individuals after he said they attempted to discuss former administrator Katie Williams’ vacancy behind closed doors.

“Board Chair Evelyn Garcia-Morales and Board Attorney Nicole Malich discussed appointments to various committees, which is supposed to be discussed at a public meeting, and then they moved to a very important topic, which was the appointment of (the) administrator B. At that point, they had already crossed the line,” Barrón said.

Barrón and other administrators have been pressuring Garcia-Morales for weeks to discuss the CCSD budget and Williams’ vacancy.

Although both of these issues were discussed at a recent board meeting, it did not come without a heated debate between Barrón and Garcia-Morales.

At a meeting on September 26, the two administrators engaged in a heated debate over the CCSD budget.

From the September 26 meeting

Garcia-Morales: “Are you going to continue interrupting the meeting?”

Barron: “I’m requesting a call.”

Garcia-Morales: “Administrator Barrón, how about we take a break?” »

Barron: “No, I think we should discuss this at a public meeting.”

Barrón said he has not heard from the attorney general’s office since the complaint was filed. He added that there are still several unanswered questions regarding former Trustee Williams.

“We are asking questions of the board chair about when did she find out that Katie Williams did not live in our state. Why she didn’t take any action,” Barrón said.

Channel 13 also spoke to some voters about the complaint.

One woman said she would also like to know more about the budget issues, the vacancy and the complaint.

“I am deeply troubled by what is happening,” one voter said. “There’s a lot going on with this board that I’m not very happy with.
