Hawaii Island Resident Brings Unexploded Grenade to Police Station

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hawaii Island resident turned over an unexploded grenade he discovered in a vacant Hilo residence to Hawaii Island law enforcement Saturday.

Police say the incident happened shortly before noon at the Hilo Police Station.

Bomb squad members arrived on scene and used a bomb squad robot to remotely move the grenade into a reinforced bomb disposal chamber.

A U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team recovered the grenade for disposal and determined it did not pose a threat.

The police station resumed its activities around 9 p.m.

Police remind the public that anyone who may find an unexploded ordnance should leave it in place, leave the property and call 911 or the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.
