I helped all the directors whose films I edited, says Leo John Paul

Vijay Antony teams up with publisher Léon Jean-Paul For Gagana Maarganwhich will mark the latter’s debut as a director. In a conversation with us, Leo John Paul, known for his work in films like Attakathi, Pizza and Soodhu Kavvum, calls his upcoming film ‘Asian sci-fi’.
“Gagana is the cop played by Vijay Antony sir who is in search of Maargan, the suspect (played by Ajay Dhishan),” says the editor-turned-director about the premise of the film.
Leo shares with us that he initially wanted his first directorial project to be his 25th film as an editor. “Because of COVID, I couldn’t finish some films even though I had worked on them. So, I ventured into management earlier,” he says.
On how the collaboration with Vijay Antony came about, he says, “Vijay Antony sir is like a brother to me. One day he asked me to direct one of his films, and that’s when I told him of my decision to direct a film. He asked me to tell him the script and he ended up liking it.
Examining the difference between editing a film made by another director and his own, he says: “When editing for another director, I have to convince him why certain scenes should be there and why others shouldn’t. But it’s easier to edit my film because I know what I don’t want.
