Archive footage from 1972 shows Geoff Capes speaking about his determination to succeed as a shot putter.

The British record holder and two-time world’s strongest man died on Wednesday aged 75.

He was a police officer in Cambridgeshire when he told the BBC’s Nationwide show that it was worth spending almost all of his salary on food to gain weight.

He said: “It’s £20 a week for me to feed myself. I’m dedicated to athletics. For me it’s worth getting to the top and being something.”
