Four people dead after helicopter crash in Houston

A tragic helicopter crash in a residential area of Houston claimed the lives of four people, including a child, Sunday evening.

The helicopter, identified as a Robinson R44, struck a radio tower around 8 p.m. CT, officials confirmed.

The helicopter was flying from Ellington Airport when it crashed under unknown circumstances. A fire broke out at the crash site, according to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Brian Rutt. The NTSB, in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local authorities, is conducting a thorough investigation into the accident.

“This is a complex scene and we are carefully collecting evidence,” Rutt told reporters, noting that the helicopter did not have a black box flight data recorder.

Initial information from the NTSB suggests the helicopter was on an aerial flight when it struck the tower. The crash site is at least four acres, said Lt. Jonathan French of the Houston Police Department. Power outages were reported nearby, but no ground injuries or vehicle damage occurred.

Residents are advised to report any debris from the accident to authorities. “All debris is considered evidence. Please avoid handling it,” emphasized Lieutenant French.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
