iPhone crash alert leads to discovery of two teens shot to death in car

Officers responded to an automated crash alert from an iPhone and found an apparently undamaged car with two fatally shot teenagers inside.

Deputies were alerted to a possible accident on the morning of October 12 by an automatic alert from an iPhone.

According to Mashable, Apple’s crash detection works by detecting major, sudden changes in factors like G-forces and speed. According to the outlet, this system has led to false positives in situations such as intense roller coaster rides.

When police arrived at the location indicated by the automatic alert, they found a car stopped, but the vehicle did not appear damaged. According to a press release, police “did not find any evidence of a collision.”

Officers looked inside the car and found Beatriz Vega, 17, and Roberto de Leon, 19, in the front seats of the car, “seriously injured by apparent gunshot wounds.”

Both teens were taken to hospital but died from their injuries.

No further information has been released at this time.
