The analysis also shows that Woking Borough Council, which receives £95.6 million from the government in 2024-25, is one of 19 local authorities receiving emergency support.

Local Government Minister Jim McMahon said “deep-rooted problems will not be resolved overnight”.

He said the Government was “committed to repairing the foundations, reforming and rebuilding the sector from the ground up to begin to get ahead of the underlying pressures for the benefit of local councils and communities”.

But he added that it “will take time.”

Mr McMahon says the Government will work “hand in hand with councils in moving towards multi-year funding deals to ensure long-term stability, ending tender processes and ensuring the sector get back on your feet.”
