1 dead, 8 injured in crash on Florida Turnpike in Broward – NBC 6 South Florida

A grandmother celebrating her 94th birthday was killed and eight other people were injured when a pickup truck carrying nine people crashed into a fuel tanker on the Florida Turnpike in Broward Tuesday afternoon, reports said. the authorities.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near Griffin Road and involved a passenger van and a tractor-trailer.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed a white pickup truck with severe front-end damage as well as other vehicles that appeared to have been involved.

What appeared to be a body was covered with a yellow tarp next to the van.

Plantation department officials, who assisted Davie Fire in its response, confirmed that one person was killed at the scene.

Davie fire officials said a total of eight patients, including three children, were transported from the scene to local hospitals.

Seven people were evacuated from the scene in an ambulance, and air rescue also responded to the scene to airlift a patient to Broward General Hospital.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said the person killed was a woman and one of the injured children was an infant.

An FHP investigator said it appeared the van, which was carrying nine passengers, struck the back of a fuel tanker truck.

Some people were thrown from the van and the person killed was a 94-year-old woman who was celebrating her birthday, the investigator said.

All other injured people were in stable condition and expected to survive. The truck driver was not injured.

Plantation Fire officials said no one in the van was wearing a seat belt. The investigator said impairment was not a factor.

The crash resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes in the area and traffic was completely stopped at one point.
