Federal officials say Trump was not in danger after a man was arrested with illegal weapons near a campaign rally in California.

A man was arrested on gun charges Saturday near Donald Trump’s rally in California, but the former president “was not in any danger,” the U.S. Secret Service said in a joint statement with the FBI and the Justice Department .

The man, who authorities say illegally possessed a shotgun, a loaded handgun and a high-capacity magazine, was able to gain access to an initial perimeter near the gathering in Coachella, the County Sheriff said Sunday. Riverside, Chad Bianco.

Once the man, identified by the sheriff as Vem Miller, 49, of Las Vegas, reached the second perimeter, authorities realized some “irregularities,” Bianco said. The interior of the car was a mess, the vehicle was unregistered and had a fake license plate, according to Bianco.

Miller was in possession of several driver’s licenses and passports with different names, according to Bianco. It’s unclear why Miller was in the area, according to Bianco, who said Miller pretended to be a journalist to gain access to the gathering.

Miller was arrested before the Trump rally and charged with firearms offenses. He was later released on $5,000 bail, according to the sheriff’s office.

CNN made multiple attempts to reach Miller for comment. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 2, according to jail records.

Miller has denied any allegations of trying to harm Trump, telling Fox News Digital on Sunday that he reported the weapons to authorities at the checkpoint to enter the rally and that he was still traveling with the weapons. He said he was “a 100 percent Trump supporter.”

Two federal officials told CNN there is no evidence at this time that Miller attempted to assassinate the former president.

The Secret Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI said in their joint statement that “while no federal arrests have been made at this time, the investigation is ongoing” and that the agencies “express their gratitude to the deputies and local partners who helped secure the arrest of the accused.” security from last night’s events.

The Trump campaign on Sunday thanked law enforcement “for securing the rally site and helping to keep President Trump safe.”

“We are aware of reports of the arrest and are currently monitoring the situation and gathering more information,” campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung told CNN.
