Shooting near Tennessee State University on homecoming leaves 1 dead, 9 injured

Nashville police say at least one person is dead and several people were injured following a shooting near Tennessee State University on Saturday.

Metro Nashville Police said gunfire broke out near the intersection of Jefferson St and 27th Ave N.

They also said all victims were transported to area hospitals. Police said five people were transported by Nashville firefighters. Five others arrive at the hospital in a private vehicle.

Authorities said the deceased victim was a 24-year-old man. Three minors were injured.

They add that at least one of the victims is suspected of having been involved in the shooting.

The university was celebrating his return, according to the media outlet. The football game against Eastern Illinois University at Nissan Stadium was at 5 p.m.

β€œIt’s not a good thing when a handful of people can disrupt the entire community,” MNPD spokesman Don Aaron told WTVF. “This type of gun violence needs to stop. We didn’t expect this to happen here, with all the law enforcement and security here. There were police and firefighters everywhere.”

Authorities believe two groups of people were targeting each other, according to the media outlet.
