European leagues and unions appeal to EU against FIFA over busy schedule

BRUSSELS: The umbrella body of European leagues, players’ union FIFPRO and Spain’s La Liga plan to file a joint complaint with the EU on Monday against world governing body FIFA, over the football calendar in in full swing.

Elite clubs are increasingly concerned about the impact of longer hours on the wellbeing of players, some of whom say they suffer from physical and psychological strain despite the huge salaries they can earn.

The three organizations’ appeal to EU antitrust regulators, first announced in July, represents another challenge for FIFA. Two weeks ago, Europe’s highest court ruled that FIFA’s rules on player transfers breached EU laws following a challenge by former French player Lassana Diarra.

Disgruntled athletes and sports bodies are increasingly turning to EU antitrust authorities to help ensure a level playing field and reduce the power of governing bodies.

European leagues, FIFPRO and La Liga say the international match schedule, including an expanded Champions League and Club World Cup, has become untenable for domestic leagues and poses a risk to player health.

They accuse FIFA of abusing its market power.

FIFA says the calendar was unanimously approved by its council after extensive consultation, including FIFPRO and league bodies.

The European Commission, which acts as the competition enforcement body in all 27 countries, can order companies to stop their anti-competitive practices and also impose fines.
