Shyne Claims He Was ‘Set Up To Be The Fall Guy’ After Diddy Nightclub Shooting In New Trailer For Documentary

Former Bad Boy Records signee Moses “Shyne” Barrow talks about his rise to fame and the nightclub shooting that ended his upcoming Hulu documentary, Honorable Shyne.

The former Bad Boy Records signee, 45, opens the trailer, released October 21, explaining how “everyone who heard me wanted to sign me”, alongside a montage of his early days in the hip underground -hop New York – before he signed a deal with Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label.

On his hit “Bad Boyz,” named after the label, Barrow reveals the intense courtships with the label that ultimately earned the then-20-year-old rapper his Bad Boy contract, which he says made him a “millionaire.”

The documentary’s trailer tells Barrow’s version of the events of the 1999 Manhattan nightclub shooting involving Combs, 54, that left three people injured. Barrow was convicted of first-degree assault and Combs was charged with felony firearm.

During Combs’ trial, which featured more than 60 witnesses and dozens of exhibits, he claimed he fired in self-defense and was acquitted of all charges in 2001 after rejecting a plea deal. advocacy.

Combs’ legal team declined to comment when contacted by PEOPLE.

The documentary also follows Barrow’s life after prison, where he says he was able to “move on.” Barrow was deported to his home country of Belize, and he furthered his journey after converting to Judaism, eventually becoming the country’s ambassador of music and goodwill. He has since been elected Leader of the Opposition in the Belizean House of Representatives.

At the time of Barrow’s sentencing, Combs said, “Shyne’s sentence is unjust and extreme because I know he had no intention of hurting anyone.” My prayers are with him and his family. I am shocked by today’s result. I will continue to do so. support Shyne throughout his appeal.”

Barrow recently spoke about his collaboration with Combs’ label at a September press conference in Belize.

“When I was an 18 year old kid all I wanted to do was make my mother proud and make Belize proud and be recognized for my talent and take over the world, I was defending him and he turned around and called witnesses to testify against me,” he said. “He almost sent me to prison.”

Barrow goes on to say: “Let’s not lose sight of the hard facts. He is not someone with whom I spent vacations and someone with whom I enjoyed this great and intimate relationship of brotherhood. This is someone who destroyed my life, and who I have forgiven and who I have moved on from.”

He also said he tried to maintain a relationship with Combs for the benefit of the country, saying, “He was in a position at that time to give grants and maybe invest.” I would not deny trying to attract investment to Belize and make the contributions to education.

In 2023, the pair shared the stage when Combs brought Barrow on stage to perform “Bonnie & Shyne” and “Bad Boyz” at a charity concert in London.

Combs was arrested on allegations of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution at the Park Hyatt in Manhattan on Monday, September 16.

The indictment alleged that he led a criminal group that carefully organized what Combs called “freak offs.” Members of his team allegedly planned from start to finish events in which Combs manipulated women into joining him in drug-fueled orgies with prostitutes, and then filmed them to silence the victims.

After pleading not guilty but being denied bail, while awaiting trial, Combs will be held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. On Oct. 15, Combs’ legal team filed new court documents obtained by PEOPLE, requesting that the alleged victims be identified so that Combs “can prepare for trial.”

Honorable Shyne premieres November 18 on Hulu.
