According to the criminal complaint, Greenfield police were notified of a stolen vehicle heading south on 76th Street near Layton Avenue on Wednesday, October 9. The police carried out a traffic stop.

Once the vehicle was stopped, the officer began making verbal announcements to the driver, later identified as Riley, that she was under arrest. The complaint states Riley exited the vehicle and removed a child from the back seat.

The passenger, later identified as Girley, then got into the driver’s seat and took off. A chase ensues.

After Girley took off, Riley attempted to run in front of the police car — using her baby and herself as a shield while Girley fled, according to the complaint. The officer was able to get around Riley and the child and begin the pursuit. When Riley failed to stop that officer, she ran in front of a second team to try to stop that officer from joining the chase.

According to the complaint, Girley failed to stop at a stop sign on West Holmes Avenue and headed west on West Holmes. Speeds were 50 to 70 mph. The vehicle then turned onto I-894 and began weaving through traffic.

Girley then drove onto I-94, where the front tire of his vehicle came loose. Girley hit a wall on the right side of the road and continued to flee. The pursuit on the highway reached 80 to 90 mph, according to the complaint.

Girley left Holt Avenue and re-entered the highway on Holt Avenue before striking another vehicle, causing it to spin and crash into a wall on the right side of the roadway. The car spun and crashed into a wall on the right side of the roadway, and crossed traffic into the wall on the left side of the highway. He stopped against the wall.

The complaint stated that Girley had a magazine loaded with 9MM ammunition on him. An additional cartridge was found in the car’s center console, along with a large quantity of unused aluminum foil packets, a box of sandwich bags, two digital scales, and a large gallon bag containing a material similar to a plant. An additional magazine, a folding knife and a crack pipe were also removed from the vehicle.

The vehicle that Girley hit had a driver who was falling in and out of consciousness, and there were two children in the car who required medical attention. One of the children was unconscious. All were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

In custody

During an interview with police, Riley said she did not know who Girley was. After the interview, the complaint said Riley and Girley were in the booking room “professing their love for each other” and Riley told Girley she would not report him. Riley further stated that she walked in front of the police cars because she wanted to know what was going on and didn’t want them to leave.

In total, Girley is charged with: second-degree recklessly endangering safety; the driver of the vehicle flees/evades the officer, causing property damage; and operating a motor vehicle while revoked. Court records show he is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on $50,000 bail.

Riley is charged with: obstructing an officer; neglecting a child, no specified harm has occurred and a child under 6 years of age; and second degree recklessly endangering safety. His bail was set at $3,500.
