Sioux City man on motorized pedal bike arrested after chase in Morningside

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A man led law enforcement on a chase in the Morningside area, according to court documents.

The pursuit reportedly began on Wednesday, October 23 at 1:51 a.m. when Woodbury County deputies found the rider, later identified as Jesse Helt, 32, of Sioux City in Kum and Go, located on Morningside Avenue and South from Lakeport St.

Documents indicate that once Helt was positively identified, deputies found that Helt was wanted on several local warrants. These warrants include driving with a prohibited license and a felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Deputies say law enforcement attempted to stop Helt when he left the gas station on a “motorized pedal bike” and began traveling west, sparking a pursuit.

Documents indicate Helt led Woodbury County deputies and Sioux City officers on a pursuit not only in the Morningside area, but also through the Morningside University campus.

During the incident, Helt allegedly attempted to put gas in his motorcycle while directing officers north.

The vehicle chase allegedly turned into a foot chase when Helt chased officers near Correctionville and South Alice into Greenville.

Several K-9 officers were also deployed to the incident.

Court documents reveal Helt was apprehended by a K-9 officer. During this time, Helt allegedly tripped, fell and kicked the K-9 in the face.

Authorities say Helt initially physically resisted arrest, but was eventually handcuffed.

The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy followed the pursuit path after Helt was arrested. The deputy allegedly found a fabric box containing three clear bags containing a crystallized substance, similar to methamphetamine, and a glass smoking device.

The office says Helt was transported to St. Luke’s for his injuries.

Helt was booked into the Woodbury County Jail on charges of interference with official acts and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was ordered held on $18,000 bail.

Law enforcement said Helt had previous convictions for possession of a controlled substance from September 2022 and had a prohibited driver’s license.
