Writer Olivia Nuzzi and New York magazine split after relationship with political source revealed

New York magazine and its star political reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, have jointly decided to “part ways” after reports that she had a personal digital relationship with a source while covering the 2024 campaign.

The magazine said Monday that its own internal review and an investigation by a law firm it had retained found no issues with Nuzzi’s accuracy or bias.

“Nevertheless, the magazine and Nuzzi have agreed that the best path forward is to part ways,” the publication said in an article on its website, which it presented as an update for readers. “Nuzzi is a uniquely talented writer and we are proud to publish her work from her nearly eight years as a Washington correspondent. We wish him the best.

Last month, the Status newsletter, which broke the story, and The New York Times both cited anonymous sources to identify Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the person implicated in Nuzzi. She did not confirm Kennedy’s involvement, and Kennedy said in a statement that he met with her only once.

David Haskell, editor-in-chief of New York magazine, said in a memo to staffers after the news broke that Nuzzi told them their relationship began last December, “after we published his profile of November”. The only profile Nuzzi published that month was that of Kennedy. The relationship reportedly ended in August, Haskell wrote.

The newspaper said at the time that if it had known about the relationship, Nuzzi would not have been allowed to cover the presidential campaign.

Last month, Nuzzi said in a statement to Status that the nature of some communications between her and a former reporting subject became personal earlier this year.

“During this time, I did not directly speak on the subject or use them as a source,” she said. “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to avoid the emergence of conflict. I deeply regret not having done so immediately and I apologize to those I disappointed, including my colleagues in New York.
