Several minor injuries after 10-vehicle crash involving two 18-wheelers on I-459

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Traffic on Interstate 459 reopened shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday evening after being closed for nearly six hours near Acton Road following a 10-vehicle crash.

According to Rocky Ridge Fire Department officials, the accident happened around 3 p.m.

Authorities say 10 vehicles were involved in the crash, including two 18-wheelers.

We’re told the incident happened when the driver of a southbound 18-wheeler was involved in a crash with several other vehicles before crossing the median into the northbound lanes and hit a second 18-wheeler.

Authorities say the driver of the 18-wheeler who crossed the median had to be extricated from the vehicle. We’re told the driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

In the other vehicles, three other people were slightly injured: one of them was hospitalized, the other two did not go there.

The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was called to the scene to assist with any hazardous materials issues. We were told the saddlebags on one of the 18-wheelers contained diesel and was leaking, which will require cleaning in the northbound lanes.

Officials are unsure how long it will take to clear the area or reopen the highway to traffic.

We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
