A Gulfport woman will serve 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting an ex-boyfriend during an argument and waiting more than an hour to seek medical attention.

Edna Rivers, 40, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, with 20 years suspended and 20 years in prison, and 10 years for tampering with physical evidence. The sentences will run consecutively and Rivers will also have five years of probation.

The case stems from an incident that occurred on October 26, 2022, when Harrison County deputies were called to Singing River Hospital in Gulfport in reference to a gunshot victim.

The victim was identified as Kendray Stallworth, 35, of Gautier.

The video showed Rivers arriving at the hospital in Stallworth’s car, telling a nurse that her friend had been shot or stabbed. She initially told deputies that Stallworth arrived at her home and then collapsed. She said she drove him to the hospital because there was no answer when she called 911.

However, a search of Rivers’ home uncovered a 9mm shell casing and blood. Rivers later admitted that she shot Stallworth, her ex-boyfriend, during an argument and waited more than an hour before taking him to the hospital. She also said she gave the gun to her sister after asking her to help Stallworth into the car to take him to the hospital.

“More than an hour passed between the time Mr. Stallworth was shot and the time he arrived at the hospital – valuable time that could have been used to save his life,” the statement said. Assistant District Attorney Jasmine Magee, who prosecuted the case.
