Miner outlines billion plan to settle Brazilian claim over Samarco dam disaster

London | BHP and fellow iron ore miner Vale have made a new bid of 170 billion Brazilian reais ($45 billion) to bury the hatchet with Brazil’s federal and state governments over the 2015 Samarco dam disaster .

The deal is a big step up from April’s 127 billion reais offer, as BHP pushes for a settlement before the start of a major UK-based class action in a court in London Monday. But Brazilian authorities and courts have yet to officially or publicly accept the new offer.
