Le Mars mother pleads not guilty to alleged murder of child

LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) — A Le Mars woman has pleaded not guilty to being charged with murder after harshly punishing her two-year-old child.

Sexlyn Tataichy, 27, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, child endangerment resulting in death and child endangerment – ​​multiple acts, according to court documents. She submitted her written accusation on Thursday, October 10.

Tataichy is accused of putting her two-year-old son in danger from around April 30, 2023 until his death on April 29, 2024. She reportedly admitted that her punishments – which allegedly included “punching, pinching and beatings” – for his behavior contributing to the boy’s death.

On April 29 around 3:30 p.m., Mars officials were called to a home in the 200 block of 3rd Avenue for the report of an unresponsive child. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

While trying to save the boy’s life, authorities quickly noticed he had bruises all over his body, including buckle marks from an apparent whiplash, according to court documents. After his death, an autopsy reportedly revealed other scrapes and bruises on his face, including a hemorrhage on his tongue.

In an interview, Tataichy allegedly admitted to experiencing several types of punishment, including “cutting off” the child’s head, punching him in the lips and face, and whipping him with a phone charging cord and a power cord.

According to court documents, Tataichy said these punishments never caused the boy to lose consciousness until the day he died.

Tataichy waived his right to a speedy trial. A jury trial date has not yet been set.
