Rip from Yellowstone literally blows things up in new Season 5 video, but Sarah Atwood gets my vote for MVP

For so many months now, Yellow stone Season 5 news was kept under wraps and locked down well, which was in direct opposition to the very public behind-the-scenes issues involving former star Kevin Costner and co-creator Taylor Sheridan. Fortunately, we now know a little more about the next Yellow stone episodes this will apparently end the series (unless Rumors about season 6 turn out to be positive), and the intense new trailer gives Cole Hauser’s Rip and Dawn Oliveri’s Sarah Atwood the biggest moments.

Take a look at the fiery new footage below, which is largely narrated by Costner’s John Dutton, despite all the reports that he hasn’t returned to film the second half of the season. I’m guessing this is either archived footage or deleted scenes from the first half of season 5, but I’d like to know that he actually returned for a sequence or two, if only to give to the character an honorable death.

And now let’s talk about some of those highlights, shall we?

Rip burns cars and breaks glasses

Few things on television can get my adrenaline pumping like “Rip Gets Angry.” As soon as Hauser’s face turns from happy to angry, you know someone is going to end up in the hospital or worse. And his rage goes unchecked several times in Season 5 footage, notably when he blows up a car whose owner we’re not yet sure of.

In fact, I wouldn’t be 100% surprised if even Rip didn’t know who the car belonged to, given the way he answered Lloyd’s question about “really getting in on this fight.” As he said:

If we can figure out who to fight and how to fight them.

It’s interesting that we’re entering the final episodes of the series, and one of the show’s morally wavering heroes doesn’t even really know who he’s supposed to be fighting.

Beyond that, we hear him tell Beth that she can’t suddenly give up fighting for the ranch or they’ll lose it. And at least one moment makes him angry enough to throw a glass (presumably whiskey) against the wall and into the fireplace. That alone could have caused a huge fireball as the car moved, so whatever caused him to do it, it must be horrible.

Sarah Atwood earns MVP status for fights with Jamie and Beth

Dawn Olivieri’s Sarah Atwood entered the Dutton family ranch drama in Season 5 and immediately made a name for herself as someone who will do whatever it takes (or whoever it takes) to ensure a victory. Which might have felt more like a personal victory for her if Jamie wasn’t willingly willing to be used, in part so he could use Sarah in the same way.

And it looks like she’s discovering a thing or two about how Jamie tried to take advantage of her, seeing as how she fights back and slaps him during an argument. And it doesn’t seem like there are any dominant issues involved at all, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they went to bed right after this physical assault.

However, I can’t make the same preaching about Sarah’s fight with Beth, who served as the aggressor in this particular case. Not only does Kelly Reilly’s character push the other woman against a wall, squeezing her face, but Beth also throws Sarah onto a table and smashes a vase into the floor.

Here’s hoping these constitute the first seconds of a major fight between the two women. Not that I need to see Beth go toe-to-toe with every woman on this show, but I especially like it when her opponents are just as feisty and aggressive, so that it’s not just a one-sided victory every time . Not that I want Beth to get beaten up like she did in Season 2, but if she has a battle scar or two, all the better.

Interestingly, the trailer doesn’t imply that “Sarah Atwood” is a fake identity and therefore offers no clues to my grand theory that the Duttons have been swindled for a long time. But I’m still holding out hope for this one as we wait for the western drama to close out the fall 2024 TV season.

Yellow stone Season 5B will debut on Paramount Network on Sunday, November 10.
