Joker 2 is released at home less than a month after theatrical failure

In its first three weeks of theatrical release, Joker: Folie à Deux grossed $56 million domestically, well below the original 2019 Joker film. Now, Warner Bros. has set a digital debut for the Joker sequel, less than a month later. its theatrical premiere, with a home video release around the corner.

Folie à Deux will arrive on digital media on October 29, which largely foreshadows the end of its theatrical run. The film has already fallen to No. 6 at the box office with $2.18 million last weekend, and it won’t gross much more in this country. Internationally, the Joker sequel fared better, with $135.6 million from other countries. This brings the worldwide total to $192.2 million, against a reported budget of $200 million.

Theaters typically keep half of a film’s total box office, and Folie à Deux is expected to lose between $125 million and $200 million for Warner Bros., making it one of the biggest failures of all time. No one expected that from a sequel to Joker, which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and won Joaquin Phoenix a best actor Oscar. Phoenix and director Todd Phillips reportedly earned $20 million each for the sequel, while Lady Gaga reportedly received $12 million for her starring role.

Following its digital release, Joker: Folie à Deux will arrive on 4K and Blu-ray on December 17. The film is also being released in steelbook, already cheaper than other recent films. The Joker sequel likely won’t debut on streaming in 2024, but it should arrive on Max in early 2025.
