Lenexa tax preparer pleads guilty after false tax returns cost IRS .5 million

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A former Lenexa tax preparer has pleaded guilty to more than $1.5 million in lost funds after filing false tax returns for his clients.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas announced that on Monday, October 21, Hophine Bwosinde, of Lenexa, pleaded guilty to preparing and filing false tax returns.

Court documents indicated that Bwosinde operated Ambroseli Professional Services, a tax preparation business, and that between 2018 and 2022 he prepared and filed false returns on behalf of his clients inflating legitimate business expenses or claiming losses linked to false deals.

Additionally, court officials noted that Bwosinde falsely reported negative income on the returns. These false items resulted in significant underreporting of income taxes to the IRS. This reduced the amount of taxes customers owed and generated refunds to which they were not entitled.

In total, law enforcement officials said Bwosinde caused a total loss of more than $1.5 million. A sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place on February 18.

Bwosinde now faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison with supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties.
