Mom accused of breaking baby’s leg

BAY, Ark. (KAIT) – A woman is being held on $250,000 cash bail after police say she broke her 7-week-old baby’s leg.

Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Wednesday to charge Katie Ann Williams, 24, of Bay, with second-degree domestic battery. Fowler also ordered him to have no contact with the baby and to wear an ankle monitor.

Bay Police Chief Keith Milam said in the affidavit that he received a report Oct. 16 from the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division about Williams taking her baby to NEA Baptist Hospital “for what she believed to be a dislocated leg.”

After X-rays confirmed a fracture in the baby’s left tibia, he was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

According to the affidavit, Dr. Thanh Dai said the break was “consistent with a 45-degree turn with a twisting motion.”

Dai also told the chief that a second fracture was discovered in the same leg, which could have occurred at the same time as the first fracture.

“She also said the fractures in (the baby’s) leg would have been sustained under great physical force due to the durability of the infant’s bones,” Milam said.

The chief also noted that because the infant “tested positive for THC and fentanyl at birth,” the hospital tested the baby for bone abnormalities. None were found.

During an October 17 interview, Williams allegedly told Milam that she got up during the night to feed the baby and change the diaper.

“Katie states that she felt and heard what she believed to be a bone-rattling sound while changing (the victim),” the affidavit states.

Milam cited the “severity of the injuries sustained…and the interviews with Katie Williams” as reasons for stopping him.

His arraignment is scheduled for November 14.
