SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Springfield is alerting residents of an unauthorized document destruction event.

City officials said in a statement that false information was circulating about a fake shred event Saturday at the East Civic Center, located at 300 S 7th St. in Springfield.

Details of the supposed event include that residents could bring up to six boxes of documents to the center to be securely shredded to protect their identities.

Officials do not know the source of the event; They think it’s a scam. They neither organized nor authorized the event and strongly advise against bringing any documents.
