Solving parking problems in commercial markets: traders

Chandigarh: members of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal have submitted a written request to UT Police to resolve the problems encountered in city markets. They asked the police to deploy enough traffic staff in markets, eliminate unauthorized vendors, reduce the menace of beggars, properly advertise helpline numbers and ensure organized parking.
In view of the traffic chaos reported in a few commercial areas, the Chandigarh Traffic Police, in consultation with the School and Higher Education Department, has identified 21 government schools and colleges which can be used as places parking.

Solving parking problems in commercial markets: traders

The traders’ body has demanded that people be allowed to park their vehicles at community centers and open spaces located near markets and commercial areas during the festival season. Earlier, Beopar Mandal held discussions with several market associations and trader groups to ascertain the situation on the ground. Subsequently, it was proposed to use parking spaces in various educational and medical institutions.
“There are old age homes, hospitals, temples, schools, charitable bhawans, opposite or adjacent to the markets. Visitors to these places park their vehicles in market parking lots for a long duration, thereby choking the already congested parking lots. These institutions should be responsible for arranging parking within their premises or in adjoining alternative locations,” read the CBM communiqué to the SSP (Traffic).
Highlighting the threat of congested and haphazard parking, a CBM representative said: “Urban sector markets need to expand parking facilities by way of multi-storey or surface community car parks at the rear of the markets , next to vacant places, underground and on the adjacent road. Traffic personnel should investigate and recommend a permanent solution to the parking congestion problem. The issue of installing signs to park vehicles in the right place was also raised.
